The construction workers at Riley wore their hearts on their sleeves once again, when a blood drive in July resulted in 43 units of blood collected in one day. So many workers wanted to donate in the name of Riley that the bloodmobile simply couldn’t accommodate them all. Although the blood bank can’t designate where collected units are used, many of them end up at Riley. The blood drive was the latest construction worker-suggested event under the umbrella of "Look Beyond the Walls," a program to help workers understand how their efforts are helping children inside Riley Hospital. During the annual Construction Day celebration last month, workers' families pressed their hands and feet into wet concrete pavers; Riley officials hope to use these in the final landscaping. The families toured the hospital and learned about how their parent or spouse spent their days at work. That afternoon, workers helped patients with crafts and games at a party in the atrium.
