Title: The FACT Program (Facing Adolescent Challenges Together) Source: Methodist Hospital, Indianapolis Type of Resource: Educational Program Description: FACT is held at Methodist Hospital and is presented in two four-hour sessions. Interactive activities cover drug facts, decision making, victim impact, and medical, legal, and financial consequences. Various guest speakers are featured including health professionals, law enforcement officers and victims of drug related injuries. It may also be possible to hold a FACT session at a community site or to arrange for distance learning opportunities on drug abuse prevention (see contact information below). Target Audience: Adolescents aged 10-17 who are engaging in at-risk behaviors and their parents. Many adolescents are referred by the courts, but parents and other adults may also make referrals. Title: The ASAP Program (Adolescent Substance Abuse Prevention) Source: Originally developed by the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine, ASAP is being implemented by IUPUI students from the schools of Medicine, Nursing, Dentistry, and the IU Department of Public Health. Type of Resource: Educational Program Description: ASAP is a 90-minute interactive session held in Indianapolis Public Schools and after-school programs. IUPUI students discuss how the brain, heart, lungs, and liver work and then describe the impact of taking various drugs on each of these organs. Actual healthy and diseased human organs that have been plastinated are shown to and handled by the participants with the goal of encouraging informed decision making about drug use. Peer pressure and ways to resist drug use are also covered. Title: SMART Moves (Skills Mastery and Resistance Training) Source: Boys & Girls Clubs of America Type of Resource: Educational Program Description: SMART Moves is a prevention/education program that addresses the problems of drug and alcohol use and premature sexual activity. The program uses a team approach involving Club staff, peer leaders, parents and community representatives. The program teaches young people ages 6-15 how to say no by involving them in discussions and role-playing, practicing resistance and refusal skills, developing assertiveness, strengthening decision-making skills, and analyzing media and peer influence. The ultimate goal is to promote abstinence from substance abuse and adolescent sexual involvement through the practice of responsible behavior. Title: B.A.B.E.S. (Beginning Alcohol & Addictions Basic Education Studies) Source: BABESWorld, Inc. Type of Resource: Educational Program Description: This nationally recognized primary prevention program utilizes puppets to teach children ages 5-9 about drugs and alcohol. It was designed to provide children with resiliency skills in order to decrease the likelihood that they will experiment with alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. BABES uses stories and seven life-like puppet characters and each lesson focuses on a particular concept and skill which the children learn and practice with the help of a trained professional. Students are encouraged to practice these skills in their daily lives through weekly homework assignments. Title: I-STAR (Indiana Students Taught Awareness and Resistance) Source: The American Red Cross; Developed by the Institute for Prevention Research at the University of Southern California Type of Resource: Educational Curriculum Description: The I-STAR curriculum provides education for 6th-9th graders including peer pressure intervention and the adoption of healthy resistance skills. The American Red Cross provides ready-to-use curricula and supporting tools for teaching I-STAR The components of the course include a teacher's manuals outlining the goals and objectives, student guidebooks, classroom and home activities, and parenting skills activities designed to complement student activities and reinforce healthy resistance skills at home. Title: Lions-Quest Skills for Adolescence Source: Lions Clubs International Foundation, associated with Lions Clubs International Type of Resource: Educational Curriculum Description: The program involves educators, parents, and community members to develop in young adolescents essential social and emotional competencies, good citizenship skills, positive character, attitudes consistent with a drug-free lifestyle, and an ethic of service to others within a caring and consistent environment. The classroom curriculum-based program may be delivered daily, two to three times per week, or weekly using inquiry, presentation, discussion, group work, guided practice, and reflection to build positive social behaviors of self-discipline, responsibility, good judgment, and respect for self and others. Parents and families participate through shared homework assignments, four parent meetings, a parent book, and direct involvement in school activities. School, school staff, students, parents, and community members establish a school climate committee to reinforce curriculum themes through school-wide events. School staff, parents, Lions Clubs and other service organizations, and youth-serving organizations participate in training workshops, school climate events, panel discussions, service projects, and parent meetings. Title: Afternoons R.O.C.K. in Indiana (Recreation, Object lessons, Culture and values, and Knowledge) Source: Indiana Prevention Resource Center (IPRC) at Indiana University and the Indiana Family and Social Services Administration, Division of Mental Health and Addiction Type of Resource: After-school Educational Program Description: Given that 3-6pm is the time when most adolescent drug use occurs, the goal of Afternoons R.O.C.K. is to replace afternoon temptations by filling this time with positive activities. The program consists of a minimum of 40 clock hours of programming, including at least 10 hours of two focused prevention activities, and up to 30 or more hours of supportive prevention activities programming on at least fifteen different dates spread over at least six weeks under the direct supervision of a Certified Prevention Professional. Title: Friendly PEERsuasion Source: Girls, Inc. Type of Resource: Educational/Training Program Description: Friendly PEERsuasion was developed by Girls Incorporated to convince girls to avoid using harmful substances. Participants in the 11 to 14 year old age group are trained to become peer leaders for 6 to 10 year olds. Title: Preparing for the Drug Free Years Source: Developmental Research & Programs, Inc. Type of Resource: Educational Curriculum Description: This program attempts to reach parents before their children begin experimenting with drugs and focuses on family relationships and communication, family management skills, and resolution of family conflict. Volunteer workshop leaders deliver the program in five two-hour session or ten on-hour sessions. Interactive, skill-based sessions help parents practice new skills and receive feedback. Title: Start Taking Alcohol Risks Seriously (STARS) for Families Source: Chudley E. Werch, Ph.D., CHES, FAAHB, Center for Drug Prevention Research at the University of North Florida, and NIMCO, Inc. Type of Resource: Educational Program Description: The goal of STARS is to have youth postpone alcohol use until adulthood. Title: Here's Looking at You (and the high school module, Here's Looking At You, 2000) Source: United Learning Type of Resource: Educational Curriculum Description: Here's Looking at You helps prevent substance abuse by giving students the information they need to make healthy decisions, helping students develop skills to refuse drugs and alcohol and maintain healthy relationships with peers and adults, and focusing on the importance of bonding with family, peers, and community as a means to coping with stress. The program presents a clear "no use" message, targets "gateway" drugs, relates directly to young people's real-life experiences, and accommodates diversity (lessons have been tested and used successfully in schools with students from a variety of backgrounds). Title: Ruth Lilly Health Education Center Drug Education Programs Source: Ruth Lilly Health Education Center Type of Resource: Educational Programs Description: The Ruth Lilly Health Education Center, located near downtown Indianapolis, Indiana is a not-for-profit organization utilizing a multimedia, high-tech, hands-on approach to provide health education and wellness programs to people from preschool age through adult. All programs are targeted to specific ages and cover a wide variety of health topics, including drug education. Title: Helping Teens Overcome Problems with Alcohol, Marijuana, and other Drugs: An early intervention and pre-assessment tool for grades 7-12 Source: Community Intervention, Minneapolis, Minnesota Type of Resource: Educational Curriculum Description: This educational program includes 9 sessions with interactive exercises aimed at helping youth examine the effects of drug and alcohol use on their lives and to consider what actions they can take to improve their lives.
